A double-height living room, a staircase treated as a sculptural piece and a Mediterranean courtyard with pool and palm trees that enlarges the house more than any built square metre could. Casa Bluma is a villa renovation in Vélez-Málaga, in the heart of the Axarquía, with a carefully judged extension and the interior design that goes with it. The starting point is an analysis of the house as it stands today: structural loads, orientation and the points where daylight and cross ventilation can play a bigger role. The project is at concept stage, and the images are renders of the proposal, not photographs of finished work.
The brief: renovation, extension and interior design
Vélez-Málaga is the capital of the Axarquía and one of the residential benchmarks of the eastern Costa del Sol. Many of its villas and detached houses are due for an update: compartmentalised layouts, poorly insulated envelopes and building services that no longer meet today’s demands. From that starting point we propose three pieces of work that are usually commissioned separately and here go together: the renovation, a carefully judged extension and the interior design.
Doing them at the same time has a practical advantage. The position of a partition wall is no longer just a layout decision; it also becomes a decision about light, views and furniture. And it avoids the usual double work: nothing has to be undone in the interior design that the building work left half resolved.
The proposal
The day area opens up. A double-height living room, an integrated kitchen and a dining area in direct contact with the outdoors form a single continuous space, with the staircase designed as a sculptural piece rather than hidden away in a corner. The main bedroom moves to the side of the house with sea views and gains an en-suite bathroom. The secondary bedrooms and service areas are planned efficiently, without taking floor area from the rooms that make the most of it.
The extension is small and precise, and that is deliberate. A new, measured volume that follows the geometry of the existing house instead of arguing with it. It is sized by what the brief is missing and by where the light comes in, not by the floor area that could, in theory, be built.
The outdoor space is treated as one more room. Pool, lounger area and palm trees create a Mediterranean courtyard that can be used for much of the year, which in this climate is what really enlarges a house.
Materials and interior design
The palette is warm and pared back: off-whites, sand tones and natural timber. Few materials, well placed. Natural-fibre pendant lamps over the dining table. For joinery, lighting, sanitaryware and furniture, local suppliers and craftspeople, which is what makes it possible to fine-tune specific pieces without depending on import lead times.
The care is concentrated on the transition between inside and outside. On the eastern Costa del Sol, life in a house moves outdoors for half the year, and the junction between the interior floor, the threshold and the pool paving decides whether that really works or remains just an intention.
Where the project stands
Casa Bluma is at concept / preliminary design stage. The images are renders illustrating the architectural proposal and the interior design.
What would come next is worth spelling out, because it is where timetables tend to slip: moving from preliminary design to the basic design and construction project, and applying for the building permit (licencia de obras) at Vélez-Málaga Town Hall. An extension changes the built floor area of the property, and built floor area has to be justified in the municipal file long before it is shown in a render.
