Natural and artificial lighting in architecture<\/strong> is one of those subjects that only becomes obvious once it has gone wrong. Lighting design is simply the set of decisions that control how daylight and electric light reach a space, indoors and out. On the Costa del Sol those decisions are not the ones you would make in Surrey or Stockholm.<\/p>\n

The two work together, not in competition. You take what the daylight gives you first, then design the artificial light around what is left: the hours after the sun has gone, and the corners it never reaches. Get that order the wrong way round and you end up switching lights on at four in the afternoon in July.<\/p>\n

Natural lighting in architecture<\/h2>\n

Daylight in a building is set first by orientation and by the openings you have. A south-facing living room and a north-facing one of identical size are two different rooms, and that is not something you can change cheaply. What you can change is how the light behaves once it is inside: surfaces, materials and colours will either pass it around the room or swallow it.<\/p>\n

Daylight also does two useful jobs at once. It keeps the electricity bill down for most of the day, and it gives a room something electric light struggles to reproduce: movement. The light shifts through the day, shadows travel across a wall, and the same space reads differently at nine in the morning and at seven in the evening.<\/p>\n

There is a local caveat, though. In Andaluc\u00eda daylight is rarely scarce \u2014 it is usually excessive. The summer sun sits high and hard, so much of the design work here is about control rather than about making openings bigger: deep reveals, overhangs, external shutters, pergolas, brise-soleil. A wall of south-facing glass with nothing in front of it is a heating problem, not a lighting solution.<\/p>\n

At our architecture studio in M\u00e1laga<\/a> we settle the lighting strategy early in every project, because it drives day-to-day comfort and running costs rather more than most clients expect.<\/p>\n

Openings: windows, roof lanterns and skylights<\/h3>\n

More openings mean more daylight. Windows, roof lanterns and skylights all bring light in, and most of them earn their keep twice by also serving as a way through or a way to ventilate. A rooflight over a stairwell or an internal corridor is often the cheapest way to rescue a dark middle of a plan. It takes light from above rather than from a fa\u00e7ade that may already be blocked by the building next door.<\/p>\n

This is where British buyers tend to get caught out: in Spain you are not free to cut a new opening wherever you fancy. Minimum daylight and ventilation for habitable rooms is set by each council’s ordinances and by Spain’s building regulations (the C\u00f3digo T\u00e9cnico de la Edificaci\u00f3n<\/em>, or CTE). Forming a new window in a fa\u00e7ade needs planning permission (licencia de obras<\/em>). In a block of flats the fa\u00e7ade is common property, so the residents’ association (comunidad de propietarios<\/em>) has to agree as well. Better settled before you buy than after.<\/p>\n

Colours and textures<\/h3>\n

Light colours on walls and ceilings are the oldest trick in the book and they still work: pale, soft tones bounce light around and make a small room feel larger. It is also the cheapest intervention available \u2014 a decision about paint, not about structure.<\/p>\n

Smooth, polished materials do the same job. Polished concrete, large-format tiles and honed stone reflect the daylight they receive, which is why they suit bathrooms and kitchens: the rooms most likely to have one modest window and a lot to do. The trade-off is glare. On this coast a high-gloss floor in a south-facing room can be genuinely uncomfortable by mid-afternoon, so matt or honed finishes usually strike a better balance than mirror-polished ones.<\/p>\n

Artificial lighting in architecture<\/h2>\n

Artificial light is how you redesign a space once the daylight has gone, or where it never arrives at all. It is also where a modest budget goes furthest: rewiring a lighting scheme costs a fraction of moving a wall, and it changes how a room feels just as much.<\/p>\n

Be honest about its limits, though. Lighting will not rescue a badly oriented flat. If the only window gives onto a narrow lightwell, no amount of downlighting will make that room read as south-facing. Put the money into pale finishes, a lighter floor and a well-judged set of lamps, and stop there.<\/p>\n

Three layers are worth distinguishing:<\/p>\n

General lighting<\/h3>\n

The background layer: a single ceiling point in a small room, several in a larger one, sized so the whole area is covered without hard shadows. It does the practical work \u2014 you can cross the room and clean it \u2014 and nothing more. Used on its own, it flattens a space.<\/p>\n

Accent lighting<\/h3>\n

Used to mark out an area and lift it. You can read the hierarchy of a building’s spaces from how much light each one gets. Accent lighting also builds different moods from the same plan and picks out the parts worth looking at: a column, a run of stonework, a stair, a piece of joinery. A fa\u00e7ade, or a sitting room, usually looks better for lighting three things well and leaving the rest dark than for lighting everything at once.<\/p>\n

Decorative lighting<\/h3>\n

The layer that makes a room comfortable rather than merely visible: bedside lamps, a low table lamp, light on a shelf. Warm white rather than cold white, low output, and switched separately from everything else. It is the layer people actually use in the evening \u2014 and the one most often left off the electrical drawings, then improvised afterwards with extension leads.<\/p>\n

A lighting scheme worth the name starts from how the space will be perceived and used, then works out what the daylight can do and what the electric light has to finish. That is the whole of it: natural and artificial lighting in architecture<\/strong> working to one plan instead of two.
